Merck continues their commitment for the second year to empower infertile women in Uganda through improving access to information, health, change of mind-set and economic empowerment.
Merck joined hands with partners to harness the power of social media to raise awareness on cancer early detection and prevention, support women cancer survivors and build cancer care capacity in Africa. These efforts are contributing to what ‘We Can.’ do together to reduce the global burden of cancer in developing countries.
“Merck More than a Mother” campaign was launched in Nigeria championed by the country’s first lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Aisha Buhari. The launch held in Abuja, Nigeria is in partnership with Senate Commission on Health; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Future Assured Foundation.

"Merck More than a Mother" in partnership with the International Federation of Fertility Societies- IFFS conducted a high level panel addressed infertility challenges and solutions in Africa at the opening ceremony of the World Congress of IFFS held in New Delhi, India. The high level panel of ministers, parliamentarians and global fertility experts from IFFS and Africa Fertility Society highlighted lack of access to regulated fertility care and awareness about infertility management and widespread stigma of infertile women as some of the key challenges in Africa.
Merck has announced its first “Africa Medical Oncology Fellowship Program” for Sub-Saharan African countries in partnership with University of Nairobi, Kenya. The program will be conducted at the University of Nairobi with the aim to improve access to cancer care in Africa.

Rasha Kelej, Chief Social Officer, Merck Healthcare, has been appointed as a member of the Human Resources, Science and Technology Cluster of the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council. In doing so, the council recognizes Kelej’s great commitment to building research capacity and improving working conditions, in particular to benefit young scientists in Africa.

“Merck more than a Mother” campaign, a pan-African initiative aims to build fertility capacity, raise awareness about prevention of infertility and male infertility. It also opens a dialogue to define interventions to reduce the stigma and social suffering of infertile women in Africa which includes discrimination and physical and psychological violence.
The “Merck More than a Mother” Campaign’s contribution to empower infertile women in Africa has been recognized with the “African Alliances HE for SHE” award from African Alliances of Women Empowerment.
The “UNESCO Merck Africa Research Summit-MARS 2016” is slated to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 28th and 29th of November with scientific support from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), African Union, Ethiopia Ministry of Health, the University of Cambridge and Institute Pasteur International.
